Producing Olive Eggers

A casual search on the internet for how to product colored or olive eggs will result in a lot of charts. Some are accurate.. and some not so. If you are interested in breeding dark olive eggs, I recommend liking the Olive Eggers Facebook page. There you will get good information on how to add color to your egg basket that is factual.

One of the first charts I encountered when I got into chickens is the one above. It seems logical, but according to those in the Olive Eggers group, this one is not based on fact. If you want to see one that is more correct, try THIS ONE. It is a more accurate chart and is based on the genetics of egg color.

At this time we are producing the F1 crosses. It will take a year to see what the girls produce. Then we will have to breed back to Maran to darken up the eggs still more. According to the chart, it looks like it will take four generations to get reasonable consistency in getting the olive eggs. To get the chickens where they are always producing nice dark olive eggs will take even more generations. As we breed, we are going to have to decide if we want to create our own Olive Eggers or just produce nice crosses to add some color to a flock. Either way we go.. it is going to be fun and we will have a beautiful egg basket along the way.
